CONDUCTING

John has many years experience conducting a wide range of ensembles from chamber groups to full symphony orchestras, bands and choirs. His extensive repertoire spans from Baroque to Contemporary, including much of the Classical, Romantic and Modern standard orchestral works, as well as a broad spectrum of music from the popular and jazz idioms.

ORCHESTRAL TRAINING

Experiencing the joy of orchestral performance from both sides of the podium has allowed John to become particularly expert in honing the skills of orchestras and bands of all levels in mastering the intricacies of ensemble playing, controlled intonation and tonal blend. With wind players in particular, John has transformed the sound and finesse of many sections, giving a professional polish to the ensemble playing of musicians of all ages.

CONDUCTING CLASSES

Having spent 20+ years in the company of great musicians such as Neeme Järvi, Mstslav Rostrapovich, Yuri Temirkanov, Ivan Fisher, Pierre Boulez, Simon Rattle and Valerie Gergiev, to name but a few, John has learned a thing or two about what makes a great conductor and how it is possible to develop the elusive “X-factor” of conducting. There is nothing John likes more than to share his enthusiasm form music and music making, passing on valuable insights into score preparation, technique, orchestral psychology and inspirational leadership.

PERFORMANCE CLASSES

Excellence in musical performance requires not only mastery of the instrument and repertoire to be performed but also a level of musical, emotional and artistic integrity sufficient to convey every detail of the interpretation to the listener. John’s experience as a performer and teacher has equipped him with a vast array of tools, tips and techniques that enable him to help with performance preparation. Whether it’s for an audition, examination or a concerto performance, his advice, support and enthusiasm can enable musicians of all ages to make the most of any performance situation.

ADJUDICATING & EXAMINING

John has extensive experience as an adjudicator and examiner. He is an adjudicator member of The British and International Federation of Festivals and regularly sits on audition panels for The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland.
